This is analogous to "Irish language schooling", I think.

According to what I read, yeah. But the situation is worse in Brittany, because almost no young person speaks it as his/her mothertongue, while there are children and young people who speak Irish naturally in the Gaeltacht, so Irish has at least 2 generations more.

That was my point, but I didn't want to appear argumentative; if children are not growing up with the language it is because the wider social network has switched.

It's amazing to think how the Celtic languages, a whole branch, had millions of speakers a century ago and are nearly dead now

Yeah and also it's amazing that 2 Celtic countries have their Celtic language official (ie. Ireland and Wales) and it didn't help, especially in Ireland, the number of speakers, even though the language is official, hasn't ceased to decrease.

I suspect a lot of it has to do with cultural capital -the speakers of the Celtic languages are considered inferior and the regions they are associated with are as well.

Imagine if Ireland had done to Unionists what Germany did to its minorities; at the very least, there'd be no let up about it, and at the worst, and invasion and re-disenfranchisement and by the British. German industrialists were allowed to withdraw monies from Swiss accounts and the country had the Marshall plan to boot. Now it's true there was strategic reasons for this, but I still think cultural vale comes into it.

(I'm just using Germany as a recent example. One could think of the more than perhaps one billion souls the Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Belgian, Turkish, British, Russian and Mongol empires had a hand in finishing)
