Does anyone know if any organization compiles a list in Ireland of top baby names that are either Irish or Anglicized Irish? I can find lists for such things as "top baby names of 2012," but nothing specifically that sorts for Irish names.

I'm working on a project on Irish names, so this would really be useful information, if I can find it.

If I have to, I can probably break some out from the general lists, but it would be useful to see if someone's already done that work for me...no sense reinventing the wheel.

You've probably already seen this, which doesn't separate out Irish names, but just in case you haven't:

I hadn't seen it. Thanks! That's a help!

I'm thinking this is likely to include popular Irish names in Ireland, as well as a few that are trending in the States. I'm definitely going to include "Saoirse," as I have a feeling that name is going to skyrocket here in the next year, with Saoirse Rónán starring in "The Host."

I wonder how Americans will pronounce it -- those who don't speak Irish, I mean.
That's why I won't give Irish names (at least not officially) to my children when I have, I don't want them to hear their name mispronounced by everybody all their life :)
A French person would pronounce Saoirse as [sawaʁs] for example... :darklaugh:

I'm more frightened by how they might spell it.

(I asked about the pronunciation in another group. The first reply I got was bang on--the responder said he was familiar with the name due to the actress--but then he went on to write it "Soairse".)

Weird...I just tried to post a response to this thread, and instead of just warning me that another post had been made ahead of mine, it aborted the post.

These will all include phonetics, and some will link to audio. There's no way we'll get perfect pronunciation from Americans who aren't learning Irish, but we can get them in the ballpark, which is better than a lot of baby name sites ("Eithne" was recently listed as a top pick for 2013, and the pronunciation they gave was "ET-nee" 8O ). If we can save one person from naming his or her kid "Ayn" (Áine), "Aceling" (Aisling) or "Sortcha" (Sorcha), it's a good thing ;) .

And yes...it's a promotional endeavor, but if we can help some people out at the same time, there's no harm.

Okay, here are some of the attempted pronunciations I've gotten back so far (using the respondents' own spellings):

"sours" or "so-ehr-say"
Seer-say
"source"
Sow-irs
SWEER-suh or suh-WEER-suh
Sear-shuh
Sha-ree-shay
Sow reese
suh-WHAR-shuh
Say-orse
sey'ohrs

A Lughaidh, feictear go raibh cúis eagla go leor agat!

Wow...some of those don't even follow rudimentary English phonics, never mind Irish! On the other hand, "Sear-shuh" isn't all that far off at all (assuming we're still talking about Saoirse and haven't moved on to Sorcha!)

It's a common phenomenon, sadly. Think of all the "Katelyns" out there. And I know someone whose name is pronounced "Ace-ling" (three guesses as to how it's spelled).
