The first full Bible translation into Scottish Gaelic was published in 1801, although there were several projects which started earlier (some translating from then-existing Irish Bibles), and I think there was one manuscript version completed in the late 18th century, but never published. The main impetus for translating the Bible at that time was the desire to start converting the Catholic Highlanders to Presbyterianism after the defeat at the Battle of Culloden.

Actually, I meant the name of that book of the Bible (Song of Songs/Song of Solomon in English, depending on your tradition). In Irish it's "Laoi na Laoithe."

Thanks all! I've just sent a proof of the label design to Tony. If he likes it, we'll print the labels and put them on the bottles tonight, and I'll take a picture for you.

I ended up going with Caoimhín's suggestion of "gaol" for the simple reason that it fit on the label without my having to make the font too small (I doubt they're going to look up the quote in any case, and it's the sentiment that counts).

They're going to be just thrilled with these, I think!

Oops! Thanks! Not printed yet, so I can fix it. I did think it read a bit odd, but there's just enough difference between Scottish Gaelic and Irish....
